A family vacation in Belize in December 2008… Nightmare for one family member…..
Two weeks after returning from an otherwise wonderful vacation, he begins to develop a 102 degree fever which lasts for two weeks. He experiences random bleeding from three small, infected wounds on his left elbow. He sees four different internists and after two rounds of antibiotics is still suffering from the symptoms. It turns out that he had three bot fly larvae growing in his arm. This video shows the removal of the larvae.
Bot flies (Order Diptera, Family Cuterebridae) are large, stout bodied, hairy flies that resemble bumblebees. The botfly egg is deposited by a mosquito or sometimes by another insect. The larva grows in the host’s body until it is fairly large. The botfly larva can easily be killed by taking away its air supply — by putting vaseline or similar on the skin where the lump is, but then you still have to extract the larva. Adult botflies have nonfunctional mouthparts and do not feed. Larvae of this species parasitize wild and domestic rabbits. Females deposit their eggs in or near the entrance of their host’s burrow. Bot fly larvae penetrate their host through the skin or natural body openings after hatching. The larvae form a tumor (called a warble) in the subdermal zones of their host and remain at this location until larval development is complete. Larval development varies among species, ranging from 20 to 60 days. Before pupating, the larvae leave the host’s skin and drop to the soil.

MEDICAL CONDITION: The condition depicted is known as “Tungiasis”. It is an infestation of the skin by a burrowing flea called chigoe fleas. These fleas tend to infest those who have inadequate living conditions and sanitation. The flea lives both outside around warm-blooded mammals and inside poorly constructed homes. It inhabits dust on floors, cracks in walls and bedding. Shoes protect to some degree but are often not affordable or adequate. More needs to be done to ensure a flea-free environment, including extermination and sanitation measures, improvements in home construction and making clean bedding more commonplace.
The parasites burrow into the skin and then swell up with eggs; the larvae hatch and the cycle continues. Fleas cause untold suffering in the afflicted, interfering with sleep, and causing itching, pain and the inability to walk. The parasite can afflict all parts of the body. Victims are often socially stigmatized, left isolated and without family or communal support.

Fruit flies are so tiny they can fit through your screens and plague you and your perfect, ripening fruit. Here’s how to get rid of them.
Step 1: Stop breeding
You can kill fruit flies by using household insecticides (making sure to follow the instructions on the label) or purchasing fruit fly traps, but the best approach is to make sure they don’t reproduce.
No need to freak out–fruit flies are harmless. So stay calm while eliminating the pests.
Step 2: Don’t leave out fruit
Fruit flies are attracted to ripening fruit and vegetables, so don’t leave fruit and vegetables in open containers for more than a day or two–or at all if they’re already overripe.
Keep the rest of your fruit and vegetables in airtight containers or in plastic bags in the fridge.
Step 3: Wash containers
Wash any containers you use to store fruit or vegetables in the open every other day with soapy water to get rid of any fruit fly eggs.
Step 4: Use garbage bags
Line all of your garbage containers with disposable plastic bags and dispose of the bags frequently.
If you don’t want to use plastic bags or discover that yours has sprung a leak, wash your garbage containers at least every other day.
Step 5: Rinse your cans
Soda and beer cans attract fruit flies, so rinse empties well before you put them in your recycling bin–or close your bin with an airtight cover.
Step 6: Keep compost away
If you maintain a compost pile or bucket, keep it as far away from your house as possible.
Step 7: Treat plants
If you notice flies around your houseplants, treat the soil with insecticidal soap or kill maggots by mixing in diatomaceous earth.
Step 8: Make a trap
Squirt a drop of liquid soap and a quarter-cup of cider vinegar into your cup. Add water until the soapsuds reach the lip. Place the cup near the source of the flies, who will get trapped in the bubbles.
Step 9: Make another trap
If that doesn’t work, leave out a small amount of red wine in a wide dish. Add a drop of liquid soap. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and poke holes in the cover. Change your trap every few days. Soon, no more hovering dots.
