How to Get Rid Of and Prevent Mold After Flooding

Try our guaranteed mold control process for flood damaged homes: https://www.solutionsstores.com/mold-remediation

Mold Control After Storms Or Floods

While a heavy storm from a hurricane or similar natural disaster can be very danger, mold which forms after a storm can also be hazardous to your health after recovering from the storm damage.

We at Solutions Pest & Lawn have gone through storms and floods ourselves so we know what it’s like. During this time, people are eager to get on with their lives after a flood. However, if you had flood waters in your home, it’s important to take the time out to inspect and detect mold and do something about it so it doesn’t to prevent the problem from increasing and being a threat to your home or your health.”

Hazards of Mold Infestation

Mold forming after a flooding disaster is fairly common and is something that should not be taken lightly. Mold can be easily transferred from one surface to another and can put infants, children, people with compromised immune systems, pregnant women, individuals with existing respiratory conditions (allergies, multiple chemical sensitivity, and asthma) and the elderly in danger from the affects of mold that is inhaled.

Some symptoms caused by mold in the home can include nose and throat irritation, wheezing, coughing, asthma attacks, and lower respiratory tract infections (in children). People with pre-existing respiratory conditions also may be susceptible to more serious lung infections. It is important to identify mold in your home early and take the necessary steps to clean it up and prevent more mold activity.

Identifying Mold

Mold growth is a common occurrence in flood-damaged homes and damp environments and usually you can smell it before you can see it. Mold can become a problem in your home if there is enough moisture available to allow mold to thrive and multiply. Dampness in basements, walls, carpets, and wood provides an environment for mold to flourish.

Microscopic organisms are found everywhere and develop easily into mold in the presence of water or dampness. Mold discoloration comes in a variety of colors from white to orange and from green to brown or black. No matter the appearance of mold, it is characterized by the strong musty or earthy smell which it emits. Browse our mold prevention products below and learn how you can use these recommended products to keep mold out of your home during this hurricane restoration period.

How To Get Rid Of Mold – Solutions 4 Step Process

When mold is on your property and developing after a flood, you need to act fast before things get worse. Cleaning mold in a quick and efficient fashion is vital to maintain healthy home, especially for people who have health complications such as allergies and asthma.

Mold and mildew grows in a rapid fashion, usually within 24 hours after a flood, and can move its way throughout a home, from the attic to the basement and crawl spaces. The best defense to flood mold is to clean, dry or, usually as a last resort, dispose of belongings affected by mold. While it may be difficult to throw away your favorite piece of furniture, a sentimental item like a child’s doll or any other valuable item, it may be necessary since a thorough cleanup must be done to remove all the hazardous mold. Solutions Pests & Lawn has a number of items which are helpful to get rid of mold from your home and in the steps below we will show you how to use each item properly for successful mold removal.

Step 1: The first step is to assess the water damage and control the moisture problem. The source of the water must be identified and fixed so that the area is dry. Standing water could be extracted by using a pump or wet vacuum. It is important to dry affected areas as quickly as possible, ideally within 24 to 48 hours before getting into sanitation.

Step 2: Remove materials that have extensive mold growth like drywall, ceiling tiles and carpeting. You may have to remove furniture and appliances like fridges and dishwashers which contain insulation and may have mold growth as well.

Step 3: For sanitizing wood surfaces we recommend using SA-20 Disinfectant. SA-20 is a wood cleaner and moldicide. We recommend using SA-20 Disinfectant as a preparation application of wood surfaces. After that we recommend applying BoraCare to all affected wood as a wood preservative and to inhibit future mold and fungus growth. Use according to instructions on the label.

Step 4: For Non-porous surfaces such as glass, ceramic, metal and plastic, you can clean them with SA-20 Disinfectant. Use SA-20 to wash down walls, floors and other mold-contaminated areas. Follow directions on the label. SA-20 is also a great product to remove mold and mildew from plants as well as wood and parts of the home that have been affected by mold. You can also use Systemic Fungicide RTS to kill most turf diseases that can pop up from flooding and excessive moisture in the lawn.
